Girl who ran away from Marriage reunited with Family

A-fifteen-year girl who escaped from her home in Samburu North to avoid being married off four months ago have been reunited with her family.

The girl heard wind that her father was planning to marry her off and decided to run for her safety to Maralal Town over 100km away.

She sought to be housed at the Samburu Girls Foundation home but due to Corona Virus the place had been closed down.

However, the girl was taken to the home of Anti FGM Board CEO Barnadette Lolonjo who hails from Samburu where she has been housed since then.

According to Lolonjo, the girl hiked a boda boda ride from Suyian Village in Samburu North to Maralal with the assistance of one of her family members.

The CEO noted that this is the time that most girls risk being married off due to the closure of schools occasioned by the outbreak of Covid 19 and administrators should be on the lookout.

She said that as a board that is mandated by the state to make sure that cases of FGM and Early marriage are totally dealt with by 2022 they will make sure that they continue with the campaign at the grass root level and especially in the pastoral areas where such cases are rampant.

Samburu Girls Foundation Executive Director Josephine Kulea who accompanied the group said that they had talked with the father who agreed not to marry off the girl and when schools resume the foundation will take care of her education.

Kulea said that they would be sourcing for a boarding school where she can learn without interruptions.

Tears of joy run down the cheeks of the girl after the family accepted her back and with her father’s assurance that she was safe.

Joseph Lowuerikoi, the father, thanked the organization for bringing back her daughter noting that they were worried of her whereabouts and it would be better to have her at home than not being with her at all.
