PS State Department for University Education and Research Order For Universities Inspection Before Reopening,.

Principal Secretary State Department for University education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi has asked universities to expedite repair works to ensure they are ready for phased re-opening ones the Government announces soon.

However, the PS said reopening of universities for normal learning sessions will be on a case-by-case basis based on approved compliance with Ministry of Health Covid-19 protocols.

He added that very few universities have made maximum progress in implementing the guidelines and are conducting online sessions as they await inspection for health safety.

“we may announce re-opening anytime but it is essential that all universities comply with the covid 19 preventive measures if they are to reopen and avoid spread of infections or even death among students” said the PS.

“Social distancing is the most critical factor in ensuring the safety and health of students, hand washing with soap and or use of sanitizers, wearing of face masks and monitoring body temperature are the minimum requirements for their health and safety while at the institution” said the PS.

The PS said this during his visit to the South Eastern Kenya University campus in Kitui and Machakos university.

Amb. Nabukwesi said he was impressed by the efforts already put in place by the two institutions to ensure the environment is safe to accommodate student’s ones learning fully resumes.

He however noted some anomalies such as limited hand washing areas, lack of automatic sanitizer dispensers and proper emergency facilities in the dispensaries.

Amb. Nabukwesi also observed that financial constraints were a challenge and encouraged the institutions to utilize the minimum resources available.

The PS also inspected ongoing Government sponsored projects at the two institutions said the Ministry will continue supporting them financially to enable them complete the constructions. He also encouraged the universities to seek collaborations with private partners.
